Arrowroot or Maranta is a popular herbaceous plant belonging to the plant family Marantacea. The plant with its creeping rootstock grows to about 1-2 metres high. The underground stem or rhizomes are succulent with reserve food in them. The leaf blades are lanceolate and the white flowers are 18-25 mm long with 13 mm long sepals. The rhizomes produce the arrowroot starch.
MEDICINAL USE:
*A soothing sedative.
*Food for infants and convalescents.
*As poultice over insect sting or bites.
HOW TO USED:
*The powdered roots are mixed with any suitable soft drink and taken to have a soothing sedative
effect.
*For infants and convalescent, use two or three spoonfuls of the powder obtained from the root in one
litre of water. boil and add honey. lemon juice, fruit juice or any other desired flavour.
*The mashed root as a plaster or poultice may be applied on areas stung or bitten by insects.
