Mangosteen

The Mangosteen tree is about 6-9 metres in height and belongs to the plant family Guttiferae. The bark is smooth and the thick leaves are elliptic-oblong, 15-25 cm. long and have a shiny green colour. The female flowers , 5 cm. across, is solitary or paired at the terminal ends of the branches. The fruit is globular, about 7.5 cm. in diameter, and deep brown or crimson. The rind of the fruit is thick, rose pink within, with 6-8 seeds enclosed in a white juicy edible aril.

           

MEDICINAL USE:
*Diarrhoea and dysentery.
*Problems associated with the uro-genital tracts.
*Infection of the mouth.
*Shrinks and dries the mucous membranes.

HOW TO USE:
*The decoction of the rind and the bark of the tree is used as an astringent medicine for diarrhoea and
  dysentery.
*The decoction of the bark and tender leaves is used to take care of all problems associated with
  uro-genital tracts.
*The above decoction is also used as a wash for infection of the mouth.
*A strong decoction of the bark and tender leaves may be applied externally to shrink and dry the
  mucous membranes.

PARTS USED:
*The bark, tender leaves and rind of the fruit.

DOSE:
As recommended above.

Normal Dosage For:

Adults: 4 or 5 cups a day.
Aged 6 to 9 years: 2 cups a day
Aged 2 to 5 years: 1 cup a day
1 to 2 years: 1/2 cup a day
Below 1 year: 1/4 or less cup a day

A Useful Table for Quick Measurements:
1 tbsp = 5 grams (green herb)
1 dessertspoon = 2 grams (dry herb)
1 teaspoon = 25 drops
1 cup = 16 tbsp

1 litre = 7 or 8 cups
